President’s Report Dear Members, This year’s A.G.M. comes at the end of another busy and fulfilling period for our organization. Foremost in our activities has been the ongoing clearing and replanting of the riparian margins of the Wairoa river . A financial grant from the Environmental Initiatives Fund of the Auckland Regional Council enabled T.U. to employ professional assistance in the felling and chipping of privets and other unwanted species and we have lodged a further application for funding in 2007. It is also very pleasing to note the “hands on” involvement of local residents in addition to T.U. members. The planting completed in earlier years has enjoyed very high survival rates and is clearly having a positive impact on the immediate environment. In conjunction with North Shore Flyfishers, Trout Unlimited once again ran a fishing competition on Lake Pupuke at Takapuna with strong participation, particularly by school age children. Numbers of trout presented at the weigh-in were up on last year and based on that success we are hoping to continue the competition as an annual event. One of the motivations behind the competition has always been to get an indications of survival rates and growth rates of the trout released by Auckland/Waikato Fish & Game. Partly as a result of the feedback, the F & G is now releasing fish in the 25 -30 cm length range which can compete more successfully with perch for food, and are less likely to suffer shag predation. The competition also highlights the licence requirements for fishing the lake. While not directly related to environmental improvement, the competition provides an excellent vehicle for the advertisement and promotion of T.U.N.Z. objectives. The next issue of “Trout” magazine will include an article about The Tongariro National Trout Centre at Turangi of which T.U.N.Z. is an official benefactor. This is a wonderful opportunity to both showcase the educational work undertaken by the centre and to also cement relationships between our organization and the huge number of members in other Trout Unlimited chapters worldwide. Finally, you will all be aware that the highly invasive Didymo alga is now present and spreading in many of New Zealand’s hitherto pristine waterways. It has a devastating effect on freshwater life including trout and I would urge you to be vigilant in taking every possible precaution to halt it’s progress while scientists (hopefully) discover a permanent solution. Thank you all for your support and may we never run out of that most precious of resources, clean fresh water. David
